What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a medical label for widespread pain throughout the body, extreme tiredness, sleep issues, brain fog, headaches, migraines, and sensitivity to stimuli.
It is considered a chronic pain disorder, but doesn’t show up in standard blood tests or scans, so it often confuses the medical world. Doctors might struggle to diagnose something they can’t measure.
It appears to be a psychosomatic condition, meaning that it is sensitive to “allostatic loads” on the brain, such as trauma, stressors, activities, infections or injury.
Our investigations suggest that around 95% of people with symptoms of fibromyalgia experienced a traumatic event, within a few months before the symptoms started.
This suggests that part of the brain is in distress, which causes sleep disturbances and physical issues, which send messages back to the brain where the neuronal messages are transformed into that feeling of pain and create that “ouch” sensation.
Around 2% to 5% of the UK population is thought to suffer from the symptoms of fibromyalgia, which is around 3 million people, although we regularly hear about people who have struggled to get a diagnosis.
Help For Fibromyalgia Treatment and Support
We provide advanced psychosomatic (physical conditions that are exacerbated by specific brain signals) therapy for fibromyalgia to help retrain your brain and reduce the feeling of pain.
Our approach is bi-directional, helping change messages from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain.
Brain to Body: Your subconscious brain has probably got stuck on a particular issue, causing the system to overheat and to send messages of distress to your body. We help the brain to release that issue, so that it can send more calming messages to your body.
Body to Brain: Your body will be sending messages to your brain, such as the signals that are interpreted as pain even though there not be any physical damage. That’s why the pain can move around the body, because it’s an interpretation of signals from nerves that normally relay messages of physical damage. Your brain turns those nerve messages into the feeling of pain. We can help to change that interpretation, so that those signals provide a different message.
Psychosomatic therapies have been used to change the feeling of pain for hundreds of years, and has even been used to remove pain from surgery without anaesthetics since 1842, by Scottish surgeon James Braid, using an approach he later called monoideism.
The brain and the fibromyalgia treatment can be this powerful.
Our approach is designed to work quickly. Some people notice a difference after the first session, and we expect changes to happen within six sessions. Although, everyone is different and it will help some people more than others.

Fibromyalgia Therapy Sessions
What happens during our Fibromyalgia treatment therapy sessions?
First, we’ll have a relaxed conversation about your condition, about how it feels for you, when the pain happens, and when it first started.
Then, if there was a preceding trauma, stressor or difficult life event, we may use some simple techniques to help reduce the emotional component of that event.
Next, we introduce some techniques to help retrain the deeper part of your brain, to help change the messages from your brain to your body, and to change your brain’s interpretation of signals from your body.
We will also provide you with powerful psychological tools to help reduce pain at any time, similar to what is used for people who can reduce pain during surgery.
You will be fully conscious at all times and aware of what we’re doing. We don’t use or offer medication or surgery. We don’t spend a long time talking about feelings.
Many people are surprised at how quick and easy it can be to change.
Fibromyalgia Treatment Medical Research
Medical research and medical treatment options for fibromyalgia are very limited. Unfortunately, the research just isn’t being done by universities, even though many people are suffering from the symptoms, which also means the medical world can’t classify the therapies as “evidence based”.
However, we have found some relevant research papers that have been published in medical journals, because we like a bit of science.
Haanen et al. (1991) studied 40 patients with refractory (long term, unresponsible to other treatments) fibromyalgia. They gave half the group a basic form of hypnotherapy, and the other half physical therapy, for 12 weeks. The group who recieved hypnotherapy reported significantly better outcomes for pain experience, fatigue on awakening, sleep patterns, somatic discomfort, and “global assessment” at 12 weeks and 24 weeks.
Menzies et al. (2014) studied 72 women with fibromyalgia over 10 weeks, and concluded that basic guided imagery produced statistically significant improvements in self-efficacy, stress (distress), fatigue, pain and depression.
It is a real shame that more medical research isn’t happening into these powerful treatments for fibromyalgia.
