Migraine Treatment Pain Relief

Change Your Brain To Change The Pain

What is Migraine Pain?

Migraines are often considered to be like intense headaches, often with a throbbing or pulsating pain, that can last from hours to days.

Sometimes they’re also accompanied by nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light, sound or smells, visual disturbances (flashing lights, blind spots), tingling or difficulty speaking.

They can interfere with normal daily activities.

Help For Migraine Treatment and Support

We provide advanced psychosomatic therapies to help retrain the brain and reduce the feeling of pain.

Our approach is bi-directional, helping change messages from the brain to the body and from the body to the brain.

Brain to Body: Your brain might be sending messages to your body that trigger the migraines, linked to allostatic loads, stress, tension, activities, nutrition or environments. The brain is sending a message that it is having problems, and this is signalled by the migraine.

Body to Brain: Your body will also be sending messages to your brain, and your brain is turning those messages into the feeling of pain and disurbances. We can help to change that interpretation, so that those signals provide a different message.

Psychosomatic therapies have been used for more than two hundred years to change the feeling of pain, with research showing both short-term and long-term improvements.

Our approach is designed to work quickly. Some people notice a difference after the first session. We expect changes to happen within six sessions, although everyone is different and it will help some people more quickly than others.

Migraine Treatment at Surrey Therapies

Migraine Therapy Sessions

What happens during our Migraine Treatment therapy sessions?

First, we’ll have a relaxed conversation about your condition, about how it feels for you, when the pain happens, and when it first started.

Then, if there was a preceding trauma, stressor or difficult life event, we may use some simple techniques to help reduce the emotional component of that event.

Next, we introduce some techniques to help retrain the deeper part of your brain, to help change the messages from your brain to your body, and to change your brain’s interpretation of signals from your body.

We will also provide you with powerful psychological tools to help reduce pain at any time, similar to what is used for people who can reduce pain during surgery.

You will be fully conscious at all times and aware of what we’re doing. We don’t use or offer medication or surgery.

Many people are surprised at how quick and easy it can be, to learn to control pain.

Migrane Treatment Research

While medical research and medical treatment options are very limited, we have found some relevant papers that were published about psychosomatic therapies for migraine treatment.

Flynn (2019) reported a 48% reduction in “headache disability” score for patients recieving migraine hypnotherapy, compared to 2% for the control group, over 32 people.

Khazraee et al. (2023) concluded that “mindful hypnotherapy is a feasible and effective treatment for chronic migraine” after studying 38 females with chronic migraine. They reported a clinically significant reduction in the mindful hypnotherapy group compared with the control group, for headache frequency, headache intensity, total pain intensity, continuous pain, intermittent pain, neuropathic pain, and affective pain.

Given that migraines severely impact around 15% of people in the UK each year, we are amazed that the medical community isn’t doing more research into the condition and potential treatments.
