Train Your Brain To Change The Pain
What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is pain that lasts longer than the usual healing period—typically 3 months or more. It can continue even after the original injury or illness has healed, and in some cases there may be no clear ongoing tissue damage.
Pain becomes “chronic” when the nervous system stays in a heightened state of sensitivity, causing the body to continue sending pain signals over time.
It can seem as if your nervous system has got stuck with that old message of pain and needs to be retrained.
Chronic pain is different to acute pain. Acute pain is short-term and usually serves as a warning sign of injury or illness. Chronic pain persists beyond expected recovery and may become a condition in its own right.
Chronic Pain and the Brain
It is interesting to know that the “ouch” from any pain is always, and only, created by our brains.
The pain signals from the body are just electrical currents and chemical changes. Strangely, there is no real “ouch” in those signals.
It’s only when those signals reach specific parts of our brains that the “ouch” feeling is created. It’s a specific process that the brain does.
This means that the brain can be retrained
Psychological techniques have even been used for people to have surgery without anaesthesia for hundreds of years. The pain just vanishes.
That’s how powerful the brain can be with the right approach.
Common Causes of Chronic Pain
Chronic pain can develop from many conditions, such as
- Arthritis
- Complex regional pain syndrome
- Endometriosis
- Fibromyalgia
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Low back pain
- Migraine
- Nerve damage (neuropathic pain)
- Past injuries or surgeries
During therapy sessions, we will talk about issues you were experiencing before the chronic pain started. This provides us with important clues to help.

Chronic Pain Therapy Sessions
What happens during our therapy sessions for chronic pain treatment?
First, we’ll have a relaxed conversation about your condition, about how it feels for you, when the pain happens, and when it first started.
Then, if there was a preceding trauma, stressor or difficult life event, we may use some simple techniques to help reduce the emotional component of that event.
Next, we introduce some techniques to help retrain the deeper part of your brain, to help change the messages from your brain to your body, and to change your brain’s interpretation of signals from your body.
We will also provide you with powerful psychological tools to help reduce pain at any time, similar to what is used for people who can reduce pain during surgery.
You will be fully conscious at all times and aware of what we’re doing. We don’t use or offer medication or surgery. We don’t spend a long time talking about feelings.
Many people are surprised at how quick and easy it can be to change.
